Roundtable with Congressman Joe Courtney
Last Wednesday, ConnPIRG and USG hosted a roundtable discussion on student debt and college affordability with Congressman Joe Courtney. ConnPIRG also delivered a Valentine thank you card to the Congressman, thanking him for showing students love by authoring a bill to keep federal Stafford Loans from doubling in July .
Student debt has become a serious problem in our country, exceeding credit card debt for the first time in history. Congressman Courtney is eager to reign in student debt by keeping interest rates low and working to the end the abuses of for-profit colleges. At the roundtable, students were able to ask questions of the Congressman ranging from how student debt effects the economy, to what the Congressman plans to do make sure that debt does not cripple recent graduates. He happily answered every question and he directly engaged ConnPIRG several times. The Congressman thanked ConnPIRG for helping to deliver 75 co-sponsors to his bill. He also called on students and "PIRGs accross the country" to fight back against any cuts to the federal Pell grant program which we have worked to preserve.
We are happy that we have a fighter on our side and we look forward to continuing to work with Congressman Courtney in the future to make sure that student debt is affordable. Check out the picture below of ConnPIRG students delivering the Valentine to Conngressman Courtney.
